amélie

With the short film Arlo Alone

A critically acclaimed flight of fancy, Amélie stars French icon Audrey Tautou as its charming heroine. After the shocking death of Princess Diana, the introverted, lonely Paris café waitress Amélie decides to make it her life’s mission to bring happiness into other people’s lives. Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet takes the audience into a world of Amélie’s active imagination, imbuing the familiar with wonder. A major cultural touchstone at the turn of the millenium, this cult classic reminds us that bringing happiness to others can help us accept our own.

Filmmaker Nicole Dorsey’s short film Arlo Alone is a futuristic drama set in an alternate world where we are introduced to Arlo, a young woman confronting her loneliness head-on. Like Amélie, Arlo is isolated from human contact and an incident leaves her craving physical connection. Both films, centering the perspective of women, tell compelling stories of loneliness and confronting the fear that comes with it.
