güeros

With the short film Rupture

Toronto premiere – Amid the upheaval of the 1999 student strike in Mexico City, Güeros follows a group of idle youths who hit the road in a beat-up Volkswagen to search for a washed-up folk musician – or at least a good time. The ensuing journey zigs and zags unpredictably as the city throws obstacles and, less frequently, opportunities in their path. In his debut feature film, Mexican director Alonso Ruizpalacios shoots his sweltering, sprawling hometown in rich black and white, with lingering long takes punctuated by French New Wave-inspired formal tricks. The story is full of poignant character moments, but Ruizpalacios resists neat and tidy resolution, choosing instead to dwell in the uncertain moments of possibility along the journey.

Jordanian-Palestinian-Canadian filmmaker Yassmina Karajah’s short film Rupture follows four Arab teens recently arrived in Canada, on a cross-town quest to find a public pool to beat the summer heat. Played by a cast of first-time actors who draw on their real-world experiences surviving war and displacement, the teens’ giddy excitement, self-consciousness, frustrations, and wrong turns take on deeper resonance. Much like the youths in Güeros, they may or may not find what they’re looking for, but the journey itself is an adventure worth having.

Toronto Outdoor Picture Show’s Opening Weekend (June 26-28, 2026 at Christie Pits) is a special highlight of this year’s journey-themed film programme (screening in parks across the city from June through August). Taking place while Toronto plays host to international soccer matches, Opening weekend will spotlight films featuring journeys across three cities in the three host countries: Toronto, Los Angeles, and Mexico City. Click here to find out what else is screening on Opening Weekend.

The pre-show period of this event will feature a microcinema installation by the BUS collective, titled the Little Free Cinema, which reinvents the spectacle of cinema as public and accessible with a peephole-shaped cinema installation that highlights works by Canadian experimental filmmakers.
