little miss sunshine

With the short film Mimine

Little Miss Sunshine is a beloved road trip film about a dysfunctional multi-generational family who squeeze into a VW van to take seven-year-old Olive – played by Abigail Breslin, in her breakout role that earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress – to compete in a child beauty pageant at her earnest request. The film features an all-star ensemble cast who act the hell out of Michael Arndt’s Oscar-winning screenplay, including Greg Kinnear as Olive’s overly-positive father, Toni Collette as Olive’s highstrung mother, Steve Carrell as Olive’s depressed gay uncle, Paul Dano as Olive’s Nietzsche-loving brother, and Alan Arkin, who won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as Olive’s drug snorting, cantankerous grandfather. Little Miss Sunshine premiered as a sensation at the Sundance Film Festival 20 years ago, winning audiences and critics’ hearts for its ability to balance its laugh-out-loud jokes with its tender meditation on family.

Quebecois filmmaker Simon Laganière’s short film Mimine is a delightful pairing for Little Miss Sunshine. A dark comedy about a deadbeat dad who wants so badly to impress his kid with a good time, he accidentally kickstarts a thrilling journey that may not be grounded in reality. Like the family in Little Miss Sunshine, this duo discovers that the joys of journeying are less about the destination, and more about making memories together.
