Jim Henson’s beloved Muppets hit the road in their first feature film, the musical-comedy extravaganza The Muppet Movie! Dreaming of inspiring the world with a career in show business, Kermit the Frog sets off on a cross-country road trip to Hollywood, pursued by the villainous frog-legs restaurant magnate Doc Hopper. Along the way, Kermit meets Fozzie, Gonzo, Miss Piggy, Rowlf, and the rest of the crew for the first time, making the film an origin story of sorts. Featuring spectacular 70s puppetry and practical effects, classic one-liners and sight gags, a cavalcade of hilarious cameos, and iconic musical numbers, The Muppet Movie has something for everyone. Accompanying the Muppets are two delightful Canadian animated shorts about the wonders of urban public transit. Janet Perlman’s The Girl with the Red Beret follows the titular young woman on a magical musical tour through the Montréal metro system, with cameo appearances by a host of local icons including Oscar Peterson, Leonard Cohen, and the McGarrigle sisters. In Tarun Padmakumar’s The Commute, transit maps come to life as a bemused newcomer to Toronto make their way across town by foot, bike, and TTC.
