With the short film Closing Dynasty
What if your rent money was stolen and you had one day to find the money or face eviction with nowhere to go? That is the dilemma faced by Dreux Jones and Alyssa Brown (played by always-magnetic Keke Palmer and SZA in her killer acting debut) in this charming buddy comedy featuring two fiercely independent Black women, all unfolding over the course of one day throughout L.A. We follow the duo’s unexpected shenanigans as they journey throughout the city with a midnight deadline to find rent money, from one chaotic moment to the next, including a search for a pair of Air Jordans that somehow raises the stakes of their precarious situation to life-or-death. Nominated for seven NAACP Image Awards, Lawrence Lamont’s feature film debut, with a wildly funny screenplay by Syreeta Singleton, delivers a comedic adventure through scenarios that feel both outrageous and all too real.
The hustler spirit continues in Lloyd Lee Choi’s poignant short film Closing Dynasty, where we meet seven-year-old Queenie on a day she should be in school, but instead is trying to make money on the streets of New York City. We follow her journey across the city over a single day, as she works to earn a dollar for what initially seems like for her own wants. Observant, resourceful, charismatic, and determined, much like the characters portrayed by Palmer and SZA, Queenie’s motivation gradually reveals itself to be far more meaningful than it first appears. Choi’s talent for capturing the immigrant experience is on full display in this heartfelt urban adventure story of resilience and vulnerability.
Toronto Outdoor Picture Show’s Opening Weekend (June 26-28, 2026 at Christie Pits) is a special highlight of this year’s journey-themed film programme (screening in parks across the city from June through August). Taking place while Toronto plays host to international soccer matches, Opening weekend will spotlight films featuring journeys across three cities in the three host countries: Toronto, Los Angeles, and Mexico City.
