speed

With the short film Le Tour de Canada

Do you feel a need for Speed on the big TOPS screen? Undoubtedly made with drive-in theatres in mind, this adrenaline-fuelled 90s masterpiece is peak outdoor cinema programming. The film that made a superstar of Sandra Bullock – joining marquee names Keanu Reeves and Dennis Hopper – as a Los Angeles city bus commuter who is forced into the driver’s seat by a disgruntled bomber who rigged the bus to explode if its speed drops below 50 mph. With Bullock behind the wheel, heartthrob action hero Reeves has to outwit the madman – and keep the road clear for the speeding vehicle –  before time runs out to save everyone on board.

Hailing from Vancouver, John Hollands directs Le Tour de Canada, a farcical short film about two rival cyclists – one Anglophone, one Francophone – who set out on a grueling cross-Canada cycling race, pushing themselves (and each other) to ridiculous limits. In direct contrast to Speed’s high budget production values and mass audience appeal, this film embraces Canadiana in both its narrative and its DIY pastiche style of filmmaking.

This screening will be a highlight of TOPS’ Going Places-themed programme this summer, so set your timer and don't miss the bus!
