thelma & Louise
With the short film Demons
Grab your BFF and a blanket, and buckle up for a 35th anniversary screening of feminist crime classic Thelma & Louise. Set amid wide desert roads, dive bars and motels of the American southwest, what starts out as a weekend getaway for best friends Thelma and Louise quickly turns into a story of two women on the lam, running from the law across state lines. Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis give two of cinema’s most iconic all-time performances as a reimagined Bonnie & Clyde, bolstered by Ridley Scott’s direction and Callie Khouri’s whip-smart screenplay that carries the same sense of emotional urgency that it did for audiences 35 years ago. (Khouri is currently adapting the film as a stage musical with Neko Case). This timeless film centres resourceful and resilient women as they defy the patriarchal men who try to pin them down (including Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen, and Brad Pitt in a scene-stealing breakout role).
Toronto director Kelly Fyffe-Marshall takes us to a desolate diner in the short film Demons, as an estranged mother and daughter (the latter portrayed by the film’s screenwriter Preeti Torul) confront their buried resentments and decide whether or not they’ve reached the end of the road for their relationship. Sharp tongued jabs lay out mutually-felt betrayals, leading them to find unexpected common ground against an outside oppressor. Can a Robin Hood-esque scheme leave them seeing eye to eye?
