titanic

With the short film Mobilize

Does Titanic even need an introduction? Ontario’s own James Cameron’s romantic epic took the world by storm in 1997, and is still tied for the most Oscar wins of all time, the first film to surpass 1 billion dollars at the box office, and the fifth highest-grossing film of all time adjusted for inflation. A story of star-crossed lovers set on history’s most fateful ship during its maiden voyage, Titanic is a sweeping love story between working-class Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio, then the world’s biggest heartthrob) and upper-class debutante Rose (a flawless, and Oscar-nominated, Kate Winslet). While Rose is being forced to marry Cal (a deliciously villainous Billy Zane), her peer in class and stature, she is quickly taken by Jack’s roguish charm over the four days of the Titanic’s legendary journey. The supporting cast includes Canadian Victor Garber, Kathy Bates, Bill Paxton, and Gloria Stuart in her Oscar-nominated role as an elder Rose. Titanic’s enduring pop culture legacy includes Céline Dion’s iconic song “My Heart Will Go On,” the award-winning, campy stage musical production Titanique, and renewed global tourism related to the real ship, including the Titanic Belfast museum located at the ship’s original birthplace. The real Titanic may have hit an iceberg, but the film it inspired remains unsinkable.

Algonquin filmmaker Caroline Monnet takes us on an exhilarating journey by canoe and by subway from the Far North to the urban south with her short film Mobilize. Deftly re-editing archival footage of First Nations ways of life from the NFB archive, Monnet’s montage rhythmically reveals the tension between colonial depictions of Indigenous peoples and efforts by Indigenous artists to accurately depict modern Indigenous life. Set to Tanya Tagaq’s song “Uja,” and without a single line of spoken dialogue, Mobilize captures the perpetual negotiation between the traditional and the modern by a people moving ever forward.
